Students at the Stafford Centre have reported a harvest of nearly a tonne of fresh, organic vergetables from their school garden over the last academic year.
Using a drip feed irrigation system linked to a solar powered pump, year round production has meant a regular supply of fresh vegetables for school lunches. Tomatoes, cabbages, corguettes and aubergines have not only improved the menu, but pupils have also been taught how to grow and harvest the crops as part of the school curriculum. With 80% of the population of Burkina Faso reliant on farming for their livelihoods, these skills will be vital for the future.
